It’s happened to all of us. The “big day” is finally here and a huge pimple pops up out of left field. You wonder… Can I really get rid of acne overnight?

It sounds plausible. Zits seem to crop up overnight. But the truth is that acne typically takes a bit of time to develop. While you’re merrily going about your day, new blemishes are brewing underneath your skin.

Although pimples don’t really form overnight, it is possible to get rid of them almost that fast. People with chronic or extensive acne may not have success with the techniques described here. But those who simply want to beat the occasional blemish can get rid of acne overnight, or at a minimum see a noticeable improvement.

Here are 4 easy steps for getting rid of pimples fast:

Step 1: Cleanse and exfoliate the affected area.

Wash with a gentle soap or soap substitute. Pat the area dry.
Get rid of dead skin cells with a mild over-the-counter exfoliant. You can make a homemade version with a mildly abrasive ingredient, like oatmeal or baking soda. Avoid scrubbing too hard or you’ll cause even further irritation.

Step 2: Kill any acne-causing bacteria.

Your best bet here is benzoyl peroxide. Read the label closely and follow the instructions.
Another great alternative is to dab a bit of Neosporin on the zit.
To avoid using synthetic substances, try mixing 1 part apple cider vinegar with 3 parts water. Leave it on your skin for about 10 minutes then wash it off with lukewarm water.
You could also try honey, which is known for its anti-bacterial properties.

Step 3: Minimize redness and swelling.

Put an ice pack on your skin for 10 minutes or so. Do this 2 or 3 times before you go to bed.
Place a couple of eye drops (like Visine) on your zit to tone down redness.
If you’re feeling brave, you could rub a piece of cut garlic on your pimple to reduce swelling and kill bacteria.

Step 4: Dry out your acne.

Dab on a bit of regular white toothpaste (just on the pimple).
No plain toothpaste? Add a little water to a teaspoon of baking soda to make a thick paste.
You can also use crushed aspirin instead of baking soda.

What to do when all else fails…

If you’re not able to get rid of acne overnight, try a bit of makeup to hide the pimple. Find a color to match your skin tone and make sure it’s specifically formulated to not clog your pores.
